Chapter 11
Margot didnât go straight home. She stopped at a liquor storeâone she didnât normally frequent, since she suspected she looked like a crazy womanâand picked up a fifth of Makerâs Mark. If Mal beat her back to her place, he had a spare key.
When she got home, it didnât surprise Margot he wasnât there. She figured he was driving in a way that made sure no one followed him. Which immediately made her think she should have done the same thing.
Margot poured herself two fingers of bourbon over the ice and poured one for Mal as well. She realized she was covered in blood and smelled like a mix of ten different alcohol brands. She laughed, thinking about the clerk in the liquor store. If he was any good at his job, he never should have sold her a bottle.
She congratulated herself on paying cash so her name couldnât be attached to the crazy woman smelling of booze and blood who bought a bottle of bourbon. After finishing her drink, Margot poured herself another and made her way to the shower.
She was sure Mal would be waiting for her when she got out. He wasnât.
She took a big gulp of the drink she had poured for Mal and cursed him but then remembered sheâd just killed two people. She cursed herself for not feeling that bad about it. They were killers and she was fighting for her life, but they were still human beings, with mothers and fathers. For a second she remembered she no longer had a mother and father. Her mother was dead, and she wished her father was too. For a moment, she was glad she killed them, but she thought about the dead men having brothers and sisters, and possibly even kids. The dead men were scum, but someone, someone who might not be scum at all, would miss them. Margot felt bad for them because even though the dead men chose to come to the Rusty Anchor, Margot couldnât completely absolve herself of responsibility.
Margot realized Greg was dead, and the bartender, too.
She wanted to be mad at Mal for not showing up at her place as he said he would but all she could do was cry.
At some point, she cried herself to sleep with the help of another couple of glasses of bourbon.
Mal never showed up.
